Warangal: Noted writer and retired professor Katyayani Vidmahe called upon the student community to end the distressing practice of committing suicide and to fight against the suppressive forces. She said many a students have committed suicide for Telangana cause. ‘Now separate Telangana was formed, what happened to those souls, who died? Were they able to see the Telangana State they fought for?’ she questioned.

Referring to the suicide of University of Hyderabad student Rohith V, she said his death was sad but was unwarranted. The student community these days has becoming impatient. Instead of killing self, the students and youth should channelise their energies to fight the circumstances and forces that were unjust.

Katyayani addressed a massive gathering of students at the 20th state conference of Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) at Kakatiya University convocation grounds in Hanamkonda on Friday. She asked the PDSU leaders to focus on students’ suicide and make efforts to stop them. Further she told the students and their organisations to be united in their fight against rulers, feudal and communal forces. The students were falling apart while feudal and communal forces were getting united and it was not good for society.

‘In just one month three meetings were held by three different factions of PDSU,’ she said adding though there were different student unions there should be a continuous dialogue and exchange of ideas between them. Efforts were needed to prevent the cultural corruption being spread by cinema and television channels. The cinema and TV were affecting the progressive thinking of the youth and students at the behest of corporate forces, Katyayani lamented.

Addressing the gathering Indian Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU) national general secretary P Prasad said whether it was death of Rohith of UoH or the notorious Karamchedu massacre Hindutva forces were behind it. The Hindutva forces were trying to steer the society backwards and progressive forces should make efforts to stop them. Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was leading Hindutva forces was also trying to get close to capitalist and imperialist nations like USA and France, he alleged.

Earlier on the day, PDSU members took out a massive rally carrying red flags from Pochamma Maidan in Warangal to KU Grounds in Hanamkonda.
