Hyderabad: University of Hyderabad (UoH) students on Tuesday stayed away from the one-man judicial commission which is in the city to probe the suicide of research scholar Vemula Rohith Chakravarti. The students decided to abstain from the hearing as their scheduled ‘Chalo Delhi’ programme and hearing were on the same day i.e.Tuesday.
According to sources, the University Grants Commission (UGC) is likely to re-schedule dates for taking the version of students. While students kept themselves away, some teachers highlighted the issue of discrimination in the university administration. They also highlighted how the university mechanisms had failed to stop discrimination against students, teachers and non-teaching staff from the marginalised sections.
“We told the commission that discrimination is not only with students, but also with the teaching and non-teaching staff in the university. We explained to the commission how university administration had turned a blind eye to the findings of the teachers' association on the issue,” said Prof S Sudhakar Babu of Human Resource Development Centre.
The teachers apprised the commission of flaws in the enquiry in to the suspension of the five research scholars. However, the University of Hyderabad Teachers Association did not depose before the commission. Barring non-UoH students belonging to Akhil Bharatiya Vidya Parishad (ABVP), no other student organisation including Ambedkar Students Association deposed before the judicial commission.
“We have submitted an affidavit and Sushil Kumar will depose before the commission on Wednesday,” said Ayyappa, secretary, Telangana ABVP. The commission sought the comments of the chief proctor, chief warden(s), deans, officials of Equal Opportunity Cell/SC/ST Cell, officials of Students’ Grievance Cell and anti-ragging cell to be made on Wednesday,. It also sought the comments from the varsity VC Prof P Appa Rao, acting VC M Periasamy and Registrar M Sudhakar and any other stakeholders on Thursday.
