Khammam: With hardly a week left for the polls, the battle for Khammam Municipal Corporation has entered into the final phase. The political parties are on full-scale campaign, trading charges and counter charges and making their full efforts to win the hearts of the voters.

In an interesting developing, the YSRCP, which felt to be an extinct party in Telangana, is fielding its candidates in the elections.

This has raised quite a few eyebrows in the opposition parties. The parties have responded by blasting YSRCP saying it had no moral right to fight in Khammam while opting out of the race in Warangal. In a similar patron, the party had also not fielded nominees in the recently-concluded GHMC polls.

The Opposition is skeptical about the YSRCP’s gesture is helping the ruling TRS. Responding to the criticism, the YSRCP attribute it to jealousy caused by its growing strength.

In the last elections, the YSRCP captured Wyra, Pinapaka and Aswaraopeta Assembly seats and Khammam Lok Sabha seat. Because of consequences post-bifurcation, Wyra legislator Madanlal and Aswaraopeta legislator Tati Venkateswarlu crossed over to the TRS. The lone MLA Payam Venkateswarlu (Pinapaka) and MP Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy (Khammam) are continuing with the party. While Venkateswarlu is now the party’s district unit president, Ponguleti is the party’s State president.

The Opposition is critical of the YSRCP for indirectly helping the TRS. In recent MLC polls held in the district, the YSRCP fielded Lingala Kamal Raj, who got a sizeable number of votes.

This move was also described as a ploy to help the ruling TRS. Meanwhile, Ponguleti is extensively campaigning for the party candidates in Khammam. The Congress and TDP apprehend YSRCP presence in the poll fray will help the TRS walk away with the mayor post.

Speaking to The Hans India, the TDP politburo member Sandra Venkata Veerayya alleged Ponguleti had a tacit understanding with the TRS and accused him of secretly developing channels to cross over to the ruling TRS by next Assembly elections and moving pawns on the political chessboard to ensure no threat to his businesses from the government.

Speaking to The Hans India on Sunday, Ponguleti dismissed their criticism as far-fetched.

“Unable to stomach the popularity of the YSRCP among the people of Khammam, the Opposition is indulging in mudslinging. If that is true, why should YSRCP raise its voice on several anti-people’s policies adopted by the State government”, he reasoned.
