  • Minister asks the municipal officials to work for more Central funds
  • Emphasises on solid waste management programmes in municipalities

Reviewing achievements of the municipal administration department's 100-day action plan here at the Secretariat on Thursday, the Minister said though the target should be achieved by June 2, officials should try to complete it before April so that the Centre would provide additional funds under Swachh Bharat Mission.

He assured to give additional funds to those municipalities, which completes the targets set under the 100-day action plan. The Minister asked the officials to coordinate with the officials of Electricity Department to complete the target of replacing the fluorescent bulbs with LED in 25 municipalities.

Around 2.70 lakh bulbs would be given to the households in 25 municipalities by collecting a charge of Rs 10 for a bulb priced at Rs 75. He asked the officials to make the public aware of the LED lights. To ease the power bill burden on the village panchayats, the Minister asked the officials to make arrangements for third wire for the street lights and also encourage the villagers to pay off their electricity bills.

Stating that the Centre was providing special funds for the solid waste management, the Minister asked the district Collectors to identify five to seven acres land for dump yards in municipalities and nagar panchayats. Once the land is acquired, Collectors should handover it to the Municipal Administration Department, he ordered.

The Minister wanted the officials to deepen the existing bore wells instead of digging new one to overcome the shortage of water in municipalities. Municipal Department Special Chief Secretary M G Gopal, Energy Secretary Arvind Kumar, Panchayat Raj Commissioner Anita Ramachandran, Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration Dana Kishore and other officials were present.
