Karimnagar: The two women caretakers, who burned the hands of little orphan kids, all aged around 3 years, with a hot spoon, face criminal cases. The incident which took place on April 15 at the state-run Bala Sadan came to light on Wednesday. What is surprising is that the Bala Sadan, which houses eight children, has nine employees, including six ayas (caretakers).

In spite of this, the two caretakers, Padma and Buchavva, who were on duty on last Friday, resorted to cruelty on the children instead of showing some concern towards them. A social worker, who noticed the burns on the hands of children next day, questioned the ayas. But both the caretakers feigned ignorance.
Though the social worker informed about the incident to the higher ups, the officials reportedly kept it under the wraps. After watching the video footage of the Bala Sadan which clearly showed ayas burning the hands of the kids after heating the spoon on a stove, district Collector Neetu Kumari Prasad directed the police officials to book cases against the errant.
Moved by the incident, the Collector spent some time with the children. Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Project Director Mohan Reddy also came under fire from the Collector for his failure to bring the issue to her notice immediately after the incident. The Collector terminated the services of Bala Sadan manager Devaram, in-charge Santhoshi and the ayas. It’s also learnt that the Collector has decided to surrender Mohan Reddy to the Ministry of Women and Child Development for dereliction of duty.
