Hyderabad: The High Court at Hyderabad on Thursday directed the Telangana State government and GHMC to ensure that Ganesh idols are made of clay instead of plaster of Paris with use of natural colours instead of artificial ones.

A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Dilip B Bhosale and Justice P Naveen Rao gave this direction on Thursday while dealing with a petition seeking prevention of immersion of Ganesh idols in Hussainsagar during Ganesh festival as it was causing great pollution.

The bench suggested that a wide publicity campaign be undertaken by authorities. It suggested to visit the
idol-makers and explain to them the hazards of PoP and artificial colours to environment.

On the question of height of idols being made, the bench felt that the authorities should not allow competition among organisers for installing huge idols. It asked GHMC to coordinate with Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Committee in reducing the height of idols to below 15 feet.

The bench was informed by Mahender Reddy, special counsel of the government, that funds have already been released for using natural colours in making of the idols. The matter has been adjourned to July 4.
