Bid to boost TDP in Telangana
Hyderabad: In an attempt to infuse fresh lease of life into the Telangana Telugu Desam Party unit which is on the verge of extinction, party national president N Chandrababu Naidu is contemplating to accommodate one Telangana leader for the ensuing Rajya Sabha polls from Andhra Pradesh quota. The name of the candidate would be finalised by Mahanadu.
The TDP can win three seats comfortably and may even try for the fourth one on the basis of second preference votes. Naidu is of the view that allotting one seat among four vacant MP posts to Telangana would help the party to strengthen its base. The party leadership is of the view that this would help in giving some kind of confidence among the party rank and file and could be a first step to reactivate the party in Telangana.
The party wants to identify new leaders in every district and rebuild the TDP in Telangana. To maintain equality in the distribution of nominated posts between AP and Telangana party units, the party high command is planning to allot two seats to AP TDP leaders and one to Telangana TDP.
Senior leaders M Narasimhulu from SC community, Telangana unit president L Ramana from the BC sector and party national committee politburo member R Prakash Reddy from forward classes are the potential candidates for the MP post, sources said.
These leaders have already been lobbying with Naidu to get the post. At present, senior TDP leader T Devendar Goud is the only Rajya Sabha MP from Telangana after another MP G Sudharani had quit the party and joined the TRS recently.
Narasimhulu was assured to give MP post before 2014 election but Naidu could not fulfill the promise due to fast changing political developments since the bifurcation of the state. Narasimhulu’s name was also included in the list of aspirants for Governor posts after the TDP joined as partner in the BJP-led NDA government but even that did not happen.
