Hyderabad: The Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao bestowed Rs 50 lakh as a surprise gift on Syeda Falak, who had recently won the gold medal in the USA Open Karate Championship 2016 in the Senior Female Kumite category.

Although her name was not listed among the sports persons who had been shortlisted, Falak was pleasantly surprised when her name was called up for receiving the award.

Ever since, she returned from the USA in April, Falak has been receiving accolades. In this connection, she was also invited to the Chief Minister’s Office, where she was assured of a felicitation but there was no mention of any cash reward during her brief visit.

On April 13, The Hans India carried a story that the Chief Minister’s promise of providing the Karate Champion with a cash award of Rs 15 lakhs remained unfulfilled.

Endorsed by the Sports Authority of Telangana State in 2015, the issue was delayed, but she remained patient. Nevertheless, she continued with her winning streak during the year.

“I was totally surprised, as there was no proposal or Government Order (GO) from the government. The CM signed it on stage in a moment. A day before, I was told that the government wanted to give me a cash award at the Formation Day celebrations, but it might not materialise as mine was a special case,” said an ecstatic Falak.

She is the first and only Telanganite to have qualified to represent India at the World Karate Championship and also the first Telanganite to win the Senior National Karate Championship. She has won multiple titles at the national and international level.
