Famed temples may find home in new districts

Hyderabad: The State government’s ambitious plan to carve out more districts for the convenience of administration will take the sheen out of many an existing district, especially Nalgonda, Khammam, Karimnagar and Warangal districts where the State’s cream of temple tourism is located.

Nalgonda is the big loser if Yadadri district is carved out of it as it had to concede the pilgrimage pride of Telangana Yadagirigutta, the abode of Sri Laxminarsimha Swamy Temple. It may be mentioned here that the Telangana government is giving a makeover to the temple to match the grandeur of Tirumala shrine. This apart, the district is also set to miss out the 10th century Jain temple of Mahavira at Kolanupaka.

The other big loser will be Karimnagar district. But for the Odela Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, the district stands to lose all other major temples - the ancient Vemulawada Raja Rajeshwara Swamy Temple built in 1083 AD, the Laxminarsimha Swamy Temple located on the banks of Godavari at Dharmapuri and Kondagattu Sri Anjaneya Swamy.

While Vemulawada will come under the proposed new district of Rajanna with Sircilla as its headquarters, Dharmapuri and Kondagattu temples will move to Jagtial district. Kaleshwaram Mukteeshwara Swamy Temple will go to Prof Jayashankar (Bhoopalpalli) district. The only respite for Karimnagar is Elgandal, Molangur and Ramagiri forts which have potential to be developed into tourism hubs.

Ahead of the State bifurcation in 2014, emotions ran deep in the people and the public representatives of Khammam district. They were a worried lot with the fear of losing Bhadrachalam, the abode of Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy, also known as Dakshin Ayodhya, to the residuary State of AP.

However, the Centre, which merged several villages surrounding Bhadradri with the AP, left out the temple town to Telangana conceding to the sentiments of people. Now the district stands to lose the temple town along with Parnasala to the proposed new district Bhadradri with Kothagudem as its headquarters.

Likewise, the division of districts will also cost Warangal dearly as the Medaram Sammakka Saralamma Jatara, said to be Asia’s largest tribal fair and 800-year-old engineering marvel Ramappa Temple as these are to be added to Prof Jayashankar district.

This apart, one of the famous tourist destinations Laknavaram is also added to Prof Jayashankar district. Another famous temple of Warangal Komuravelli Mallanna will be part of the newly-proposed Siddipet district.
