​Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Thursday approved a proposal to set up residential Gurukul Vidyalayam for the Backward Caste communities on the lines of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Minorities.

The Chief Minister, who reviewed the performance of BC Welfare Department, directed officials to upgrade 16 of the 23 residential schools into colleges. KCR also agreed to the proposal for setting up of new boys and girls residential schools.

He wanted the BC Gurukul to function as social welfare residential schools and directed the department officials to talk to Praveen Kumar, who has been looking after SC residential schools.

The Chief Minister also gave his approval for starting overseas scholarship scheme with Rs 100 crore for the BC students, who are going for higher education to foreign countries. Presently, a scholarship programme is being implemented for SC, ST and Minorities students.

He wanted the officials to prepare guidelines to benefit the BC students. He directed officials to prepare special programmes for uplift of people belonging to Backward Classes.

He wanted officials to prepare special plans for the uplift of sub castes in BCs after verifying their standard of living.
