Hyderabad Sailing Week 2016 concluded in a grand ceremony at Sailing Annexe, Secunderabad Club on 02 Jul.
1. Hyderabad Sailing Week 2016 concluded in a grand ceremony at Sailing Annexe, Secunderabad Club on 02 Jul. The event was jointly hosted by the EME Sailing Association and the Secunderabad Sailing Club, under the aegis of Laser Class Association of India. Lt Gen Gurmukh Singh, SM, VSM**, President Laser Class Association of India (LCAI) complimented the sailors on high standard of sailing and competitive spirit displayed by all participants. He has also thanked Government of Telangana, sister organizations and sponsors for making the event a phenomenal success.
2. From a humble beginning in 1986 the event has come a long way. The unprecedented level of participation achieved in this year’s Regatta is a testimony to the growing popularity of the sport in the twin cities. The event has witnessed a total participation of 206 Sailors and 176 boats from 15 prominent clubs of Sailing across the country. A total of 21 Women sailors have also participated in various categories of this ‘Multi Class Sailing Championship’. The passion of Mr. Muruli Kanuri aged 65 yrs and eight months, the oldest participant of the Regatta and the enthusiasm of Master P Akhil aged 11 yrs and four months, the youngest participant, was both inspiring and heartening for all the spectators and organizers. 3. Sailing being a sport which entails only collaborating with the natural elements without any pollution will definetly assist the cause of the Hussain Sagar lake, the lake located in the heart of the city is facing population pressure. To restore this large inland water lake to its previous glory a large no of initiatives were taken up by the organisers which included a Biker’s rally and a Green Brigade walk were also organized on 27th June and 01 Jul respectively to spread the message of clean and green Hussain Sagar Lake which has witnessed a large no of participations from city natives.
4. The prevailing weather conditions and wind speeds provided ideal settings for the Sailing Regatta, which resulted in the championship witnessing stiff competition in all categories. Laser 4.7 open trophy and Laser 4.7 (boys) under 18 years trophy presented to Mstr Rishab Nayar of YCH and Laser 4.7 (Girls) under 18 years trophy presented to Miss Hashita Tomar of NSS.
The prestigious Secunderabad Sailing Club Rolling Trophy for overall winner without discard in Laser Radial Rig and the biggest Laser Radial open Trophy for overall winner goes to Mstr Vishnu Sarvanan of TSC, Laser Radial Women Trophy for overall winner in women category goes to Miss Nethara Kumanan of TNSA. Laser Standard Open trophy for overall winner in Laser Standard, the prestigious ‘Katari Bowl’ for maximum gun in laser standard Rig and Late Lt Cdr Kelly S Rao trophy goes to Mr Gitesh of AYN. These young Sailors from Hyderabad would undoubtedly carry fwd the legacy of Maj AA Basith (Retd), Late Lt Cdr Kelly S Rao, Lt Col DS Dikhit (Retd) & Hony Capt Rajesh Choudhary (Retd) who honed their skills in Hussain Sagar lake.
5. The record participation in Multi Class sailing Championship-2016 has brought to fore many budding Sailors. Sustained efforts of LCAI in terms of organizing competitions, would undoubtedly nurture this young talent and provide a boost to their performance at international sailing regattas. The conducive environment provided by Hyderabad coupled with development of sailing infrastructure at Hussain Sagar would definitely make the sport more popular amongst the local population. The Multi Class sailing Championship-2016 would act as a stepping stone for these young sailors to achieve Olympic Glory for the nation in future.
