Hyderabad: The presence of open manholes in the city is not only limited to densely populated areas like Amberpet, Shivam Road, Uppal and Srinagar Colony, but also to the upmarket areas like Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills.

The ‘callousness’ of GHMC field level officials has always been very glaring and continues to reflect every other day. A case in point is the open manhole on Jubilee Hills Road No. 39, which connects the busy Jubilee Hills Road No. 36 and Road No. 45.

During Wednesday’s sudden downpour, a few pedestrians who were walking down Road No. 39 got the shock of their life when one of them tripped in to the open storm water channel as he could not see the submerged footpath. Thanks to the timely action of his friend, he was saved from a serious injury.

Residents and commuters accused the corporation officials of turning a blind eye to the open manhole here. Strangely, neither GHMC nor the Water Works department has put a signage warning pedestrians of a storm water drain with a missing manhole cover.

Throwing more light on the open manhole here, P Sai Krishna, an assistant engineer in a construction company said, "I have been working near Road No. 39 for two years. The open status of the manhole remained unchanged even after registering several complaints with the civic body." He said that the manhole cover which saw minor damages this January was now completely gone.

A Abhinav Reddy, a senior manager in a corporate firm, said, he recently had a bitter experience in the night during a stopover on the road to attend a phone call. I narrowly missed the uncovered storm water channel only because of sheer luck, he said.

"Whenever it rains, water gushes out of the uncovered manhole making it difficult for pedestrians and motorists alike," he said. When contacted, GHMC authorities promised to resolve the grievance within 24 hours and assured to initiate appropriate action against the contractors concerned for negligence, if any.
