Warangal: The hostels of Kakatiya University, which is ranked second after Osmania University in the State, are in a pitiable state for want of maintenance. The recent death of a research scholar Shyam, due to injuries he sustained when he slipped in the wash room of one of the university’s hostels, mirrors the sorry state of the affairs. The maintenance of hostels, which were built four decades ago, has been thrown to the winds.

The University has jurisdiction over 400 colleges in Khammam, Adilabad and Warangal districts. It offers 37 PG courses to students and a total of 3,056 students are housed in Padmakshi, Ganapatideva, Vivekananda, Potana, Prataparudra, Vidyaranya, Jagjivan Ram and Dr Ambedkar hostels.

  • Research scholar Shyam sustained injuries he when he slipped in the wash room of one of the university’s hostels
  • Hostels are overcrowded and lacking in basic amenities
  • Authorities turn a blind eye to numerous agitations by students on this count

The university introduces new courses every year and the tuition fee paid by the students constitutes the main source of income for the university.

However, despite numerous agitations by the students, the authorities have turned a blind eye to the state of the hostels. 10 hostels are in a really bad shape. Responding to the proposals sent by the then KU hostels’ director Manohar, Rs 38 lakh was released to the office of the KU development officer for undertaking the repairs. But, precious little has been done.

According to Chandana and Sravani of Potana hostel, no repairs works of any sort have been undertaken in their hostel since its inception in 1979. Besides, the rooms are overcrowded with 300 students sharing the accommodation, which was meant for 200. Over and above the capacity of 600 in the Padmakshi hostel, the officials accommodated 800 to 900 students.

The students are feeling congested and the garbage generated has turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The Ganapatideva hostels, which accommodate 210 students, are in fact former class rooms. They have been converted into hostel rooms with no significant provision of amenities. History department professor Dr Manohar on July 1 stepped down as Kakatiya University Hostels Division Director, but the authorities are yet to approve his resignation.

Meanwhile, the hostels are without a Director and new students seeking renewal of their accommodation are in a state of confusion. Student unions have been demanding that authorities resolve the issues of the hostels as soon as possible and that the government appoint a new vice-chancellor to the university who would solve its problems.
