Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Mayor Bonthu Rammohan on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the construction of a “baby tank” near Koneru Lake at Cherlapally, which would be used for Ganesh idol immersions. He also sanctioned Rs 4.90 crore for the beautification of the lake.

Speaking to media persons here, the GHMC Mayor said the Corporation would take up “baby tank” project (following the Bengaluru model as per the High Court) on pilot basis at Koneru Lake for which the civic body spent Rs 67 lakh for Ganesh immersion arrangements.

He said that similar baby tank projects would be taken up near 10 different lakes in the twin cities soon. Depending on the project results, the GHMC would take up the project near 50 lakes next year, he said.

The GHMC Mayor further said that the GHMC would coordinate with the HMDA and the Irrigation Department to take up the beautification of the lakes in the near future by providing walk path, cycling track, children play park and lighting arrangements.

He further said that a sewerage treatment plant would be set up at Cherlapally lake and recycled water would be diverted into the lake. He asked “encroachers” to vacate the FTL lands in order to get rehabilitated by the civic body.
