Hyderabad: After much ado, the Congress has decided to hold Power Point Presentation (PPP) aimed at countering the claims of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao over various irrigation projects, at Gandhi Bhavan here on July 23. The PPP will be carried out by TPCC chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy.

Speaking to mediapersons at Gandhi Bhavan here on Monday, TPCC chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy alleged that the TRS government was spending thousands of crores of rupees on projects, which may not stand the test of time.

He said that the government was pumping in money into projects which are not based on scientific approach and sound technical knowledge. Hence, the projects would not only prove to be “futile” in terms of ayacut, but may also push the future generation of Telangana into huge debts.

The Congress leader pointed out that an amount of Rs 80,000 crore was being spent on various projects, including Kaleshwaram, Palamuru Ranga Reddy and Dindi which do not have Detailed Project Reports (DPR). “I have never come across such a wasteful spending of public money by any government,” he wondered.

Giving the power point presentation on Jawaharlal Nehru Lift Irrigation Project in Haryana to TPCC president and other leaders, Forum for Utilisation of Godavari Waters Chairman and Former Vice-Chairman of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Marri Shashidhar Reddy said that the Haryana government was supplying irrigation water to the fields directly through canals, without constructing reservoirs.

On the same lines, the Telangana government could adopt the technology and supply water to the fields without constructing projects, he said. Demanding that the government stop acquisition of land for the projects, the former Minister asked the government to redesign the Kaleshwaram project,

which could meet the irrigation needs of Medak and also avoid displacement of people in the name of Mallannasagar project. He asked the State government to prepare plans, including sump, pumping station, huge and small canals to supply the water directly to the fields.

He also demanded that the government make public the DPRs, which should take into consideration Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) along with Social Impact Assessment (SIA).
