Hyderabad: With the transport department going paperless and cashless from Tuesday, citizens fumed at the excess amount being charged as service tax for availing of the services. They alleged that they were being forced to shell out extra money in the name of service charge at e-Seva centres and network providers, who are charging Rs 50 near RTA offices.
Citizens coming to the RTA office alleged that the e-Seva and Mee-Seva centres were charging Rs 25 as service tax for carrying out online transactions like slot booking and others. They argued that the service tax was already paid to the transport department and questioned the need to pay additional fee for the same service.
For instance, the prescribed fee for renewal of permit vehicle is Rs 550 and because of the online system Rs 25 is being collected additionally. Similarly, Rs 85 is the actual fee for receiving a NOC, but with online system in place the amount is now Rs 110.
A customer, G Chandramohan, who came for transfer of his vehicle bearing number AP 09 Y 5114 said he paid Rs 375 as government fee. He said that the e-Seva people collected Rs 25 for service resulting in payment of Rs 400. He said that the e-Seva had accepted the slot between 2 pm to 3, pm but when he came to the office the counter was closed.
Another customer Abdul Samad, who came for renewal of permit of his vehicle AP 09W 6809 had paid Rs 550 plus an additional Rs 25 as service charge. Yet another customer Kota Yadagiri said that he had come for renewal of his driving license.
“The government fee is Rs 100, Smart Card charges are Rs 200, service charges are Rs 150 and postal charges are Rs 35, totaling Rs 485. With the e-Seva too collecting service charge, the total money spent is Rs 510. Why do I need to pay service tax twice for one transaction?” he asked.
Some of them took the help of service providers sitting near the RTA office. People with laptop and a network connection were seen collecting Rs 50 for one online transaction. Yadagiri said that educated citizens can have internet and other facilities and wondered how would common people manage. He said that the RTA officials have started a new ‘dhanda’.
