Hyderabad: A two-judge bench of the High Court at Hyderabad comprising Justice Ramasubramanian and Justice Anis on Wednesday rejected the plea for medical seats on sports quota for players of tennikoit, power lifting, netball, throwball, sepak takraw (kick volleyball) and boxing.

The bench frowned on the idea of “sports quota” in medical seats and cautioned that “never the twain shall meet.” The bench was dealing with a petition filed by Pamu Tharuni, contending that sportspersons interest in the said sports were not being considered for reservations.

Speaking for the bench Justice Ramasubramanian said, “It is sad that except video games, all other games have been brought within the sports quota to enable persons, who cannot excel in academics, to gain admission to undergraduate medical courses through back door.

The result was that the field of sports as well as professional education took a beating. Ultimately, persons, who gained admission to medical courses, would lose their interest in sports if they really had some.
