Hyderabad: The Telangana Congress Committee on Tuesday organised black flag demonstration across the State in protest against the signing of memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Maharashtra and Telangana State on inter-State irrigation projects the River Godavari.

The Congress leaders staged protests in front of all district Collectorates and alleged that the agreement was detrimental to the interest of the State. They also accused the TRS government of misleading the people by making false claims that the agreement was a great achievement.

"By giving exaggerated publicity, TRS government is projecting itself as it is farmer-friendly,” TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy told reporters at Hyderabad Collectorate.

Uttam Kumar Reddy said that "KCR’s claim to stabilise ayacut for one crore acres in the State is misleading." During the years from 197-2012, successive Congress governments had entered into several agreements with the Maharashtra over the use of Godavari waters which included agreement on Pranahitha Chevella, he said.

The Congress government had not only prepared DPRs for the project but also started the project works at a cost of Rs 38,500 crore . It was also proposed to have a barrage of 152 meters height at Tammidihatti with a capacity of 160 tmcft.

This could have provided irrigation water to 16.4 lakh acres in nearly seven districts in the State, besides providing drinking water to the neighbouring areas and 30 tmcft drinking water to Hyderabad in addition, he said.

He alleged that the TRS government had agreed to decrease the barrage height at Tammidihatti to148 meters and wanted to construct barrage at Medigadda, namely Kaleshwaram Ettipottala by redesigning the entire earlier project designs.

He said the height of Tammidihatti was proposed to be 152 meters keeping in view the submergence in the area for over 100 years and was designed by technical experts, he said. The TPCC chief alleged that the Kaleshwaram project would lead to submergence of nearly one lakh acre of fertile land.
