Mahabubnagar: The school education department along with Telangana Sarvasiksha Abhiyaan (TSA) authorities is planning to install biometric attendance system in all the government schools across the district in a phased manner.

In the initial phase, the education department has decided to set up biometric systems in 25 per cent government schools. This means out of 3659 schools, the biometric systems will be installed in 915 schools. “The main aim of installing biometric attendance system is to ensure transparency of teachers’ attendance in the government schools.

This will not only improve the quality of education but also improves the students’ attendance and increases enrolment in the government schools. In the initial phase we have decided to install the biometric systems in 915 schools,” informed Govindrajulu, Project Officer, Telangana Sarvasiksha Abiyaan.

The authorities are initially focusing on the rural area schools particularly in the remote hamlets and tribal Thandas across the district. “Majority teachers in Tribal Thandas and rural areas come at 11 to 11.30 AM and stay in the schools for one or two hours and leave by afternoon. There are rare occasions when a teacher spends entire 7 hours in the rural schools. Because of their lack of attendance the students also do not go to schools.

Worried over this, the poor parents despite of their financial constrains are now preferring to send their children to private schools rather than enrolling them in government schools. The government should take more steps to improve quality of education by overhauling the entire education system and give priority to accountability and transparency,” says Mudavath Shankar Chowhan, a resident of Kothathanda village.

The literacy rate in Mahabubnagar is 56 per cent and this is much below the average literacy rate of Telangana which is at 66 per cent. According to educational experts, the main reason for downfall of quality of education in government schools is lack of teachers’ attendance. As already many schools are suffering with insufficient teaching staff, on the top of it the existing teachers are also irregular to their duties.

Having understood that teacher’s attendance and punctuality is the key for improving quality and enrolment, the education department has taken up the mammoth task of installing the biometric systems and the authorities are gathering the details of all government primary and upper primary schools located in the remote rural areas.
