New Delhi: The Telangana government has suggested vital policy changes to the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ (BBBP) programme that has remained a non-starter despite its announcement by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014.

Telangana Education Minister Kadiyam Srihari and TRS MPs Jitender Reddy, A S R Nayak, P Dayakar and the special representative of the State government in Delhi, Ramchandru Tejawat, met the Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar here on Thursday to suggest him the need to alter the policy to realise the goals of the BBBP.

Speaking to media persons later, Kadiyam informed that the enrollment of girls in the schools across the country was quite low and the figure was alarming when it came to the weaker sections like SCs and STs.

The school dropout rate too was very high, he said. Hence, it was imperative that the Centre moved over a residential school system for girls in all States with CBSE syllabus in English medium.

Alongside, the scheme of Kasturba Balika Vidyalayas which encourages orphans, dropouts, children of single parent etc to go to school, should be extended up to Class 12. At present, it was being implemented only up to Class 8 and the Telangana government had extended it up to Class 10.

Kadiyam said the move should come alongside extending the mid-day meal scheme up to Class 12 to improve the retention rate of girl students.

He said the Model School Scheme that was scrapped by the Centre should be restored as the scheme, which was launched by the UPA government, was really useful in educating the girl child in remote rural areas.

"The Centre should not only restore, but also go in for more such schools," he felt. He said Javadekar was happy to note the changes suggested and promised to take the same forward.
