Hyderabad: The word ‘intermittent’ could be replaced by continuous rain for once. Relentless downpour literally brought the city traffic to a snail’s pace. Cars moved inch by inch, bumper to bumper and motorists scampered for shelter under the Metro rail pillars as travelling from one place to another took hours. From Begumpet to Basheerbagh, Putlibowli to Panjagutta, the story was the same. Traffic congestion lasted for almost five hours upsetting plans of people.

While a few missed to catch a train, others postponed their plans. Akhil, a software engineer said, “The traffic police just lost the plot and the municipal corporation failed once again. Potholes, drainage water and utter chaos ruled.”

Slow movement of traffic was witnessed between Hyderguda and Basheerbagh, Fever Hospital towards Tilaknagar, KCP junction towards NIMS hospital, Panjagutta junction, Nagarjuna circle, Panjagutta, Monappa junction(Rajiv Gandhi statue),

CM Camp office, Greenlands, Begumpet flyover, Tarnaka towards Railway Degree College, Shivaji bridge, Bandlaguda, NTR marg towards Necklace rotary, Khairatabad junction, Ravindra Bharathi, Lakdikapool, Iqbal minar, Ayodya, Nirankari, Old PS Saifabad, Masab Tank, NMDC, Mehdipatnam, Rethibowli and Tolichowki.

Till 11 pm on Friday, heavy traffic jam was seen on Road No 1/10 Banjara Hills, Road No 1/12 Banjara Hills, Masab Tank, NMDC, Mehdipatnam, Telugu Talli junction, Ambedkar Statue, Liberty junction, Himayathnagar, Rethibowli, Nanalnagar, Tolichowki, KCP junction, Taj Krishna, Nagarjuna circle, Panjagutta and Somajiguda circle.

Coming to grips, traffic police issued alerts appealing public to avoid the mentioned routes through social networking sites. Police also asked people in general not to come on to the roads for an hour after rain stopped.

The downpour started at around 3.30 pm on Friday and lasted for over three hours. It was tough task for the traffic police to clear the traffic jams caused due to water logging. The city recorded an average rainfall of 6 centimetres.
