Mahbubnagar: The ‘Deepam’ programme of subsidised distribution of gas connections to the Below Poverty Line families in Mahbubnagar is moving at snail’s pace as only about 50 per cent of beneficiaries have been distributed gas connections, while the remaining are running from pillar to post to get their gas connections.

Despite repeated reminders and requests by the beneficiaries to distribute the subsidised gas connections sanctioned under ‘Deepam’ programme, even after more than three months the deadline coming to an end, the lackadaisical attitude of the officials and undue interference and pressure by local leaders delayed the implementation of the scheme in the district.

In fact, the district has been allocated about 98,500 Deepam connections for the year 2016-17, for which the officials were asked to identify the beneficiaries by the end of July and start distribution as early as possible.

However, till date the officials could identify only 73,190 beneficiaries, much less than the allocated numbers. Even among these identified beneficiaries, the authorities could sanction only 66,200 connections.

Officials attribute the slow pace of identification due to the lack of adequate documents available with the beneficiaries.

“I am still using firewood for cooking. We as members of Self Help Group had applied for Deepam gas connection more than three years ago. Despite submitting Aadhaar card, ration card, copy of Self Help Group and bank account, I have not got the connection even today.

I have visited the MPDO office and submitted so many requests but no use,”says Laxammamma of Narsayapally village.

However, when enquired about the delay in the implementation of the scheme, Rajaram, District Supply Officer said, “We have given clear instructions to the concerned officials and MPDO and municipal authorities to complete the distribution process as early as possible. If delayed, we will take necessary disciplinary action against them,” he said.
