FARMER SUICIDES

Hyderabad: Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy lashed out at the Congress and Telugu Desam parties for criticising the State government on farmers’ issues and suicides.

  • Takes a dig at the previous govts for their lopsided policies that led to neglect of farmers
  • Castigates Congress, TDP and BJP leaders for coming in the way of development process

Addressing mediapersons, along with MLCs Palla Rajeshwar Reddy and P Sudhakar Reddy here on Friday, Pocharam attributed the suicides by farmers and other problems in the State, to the utter failure of the previous governments. Had the previous governments taken care to implement welfare measures properly, farmers would not have suffered the problems, he remarked.

Taking a dig at the successive governments for their lopsided policies and totally ignoring the farmers, the Minister said had they built projects on the Godavari and Krishna rivers, agriculture activity would have flourished tremendously.

Srinivas Reddy sought to know as to why the Congress, TDP and BJP leaders were coming in the way of development process. The leaders in previous governments pocketed funds in the name of projects and drove farmers to commit suicide. He also charged the Congress leaders with not bothering about farmers during their regime.

He also said the Centre had ignored Telangana government’s pleas for financial assistance towards input subsidy. The BJP leaders of Telangana should impress upon the Centre to give funds for the same and drought relief, he suggested.

In the united Andhra Pradesh, the rulers had scornfully ignored the projects in Telangana, he charged. The TRS government was striving for the welfare of farmers and giving nine-hour uninterrupted power supply and was also trying to complete the projects on a war-footing, he remarked. “The Opposition parties should stop mud-slinging for political mileage.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s aim is to irrigate one crore acres of land over five years and he has allocated huge funds for irrigation projects,” he maintained. Now that the State had received copious rainfall, the farmers were in a position to get irrigation waters for second crop, he said. The State government had taken steps to supply seed and fertilisers adequately to the farmers, he added.
