Hyderabad: Bodies of the slain Maoists, who were killed in an exchange of fire with the police in the Andhra-Odisha border (AOB) should be preserved if they are brought into Andhra Pradesh or Telangana, ordered the High Court at Hyderabad on Monday.

Hearing an urgent lunch motion PIL filed by Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee member Chiluka Chandrashekar, the division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice A Shankar Narayana gave the direction.

Andhra Pradesh Advocate General Dammalapati Srinivas informed the bench that it was not clear at the time of hearing whether the encounter took place in Andhra Pradesh or Odisha and it was still not clear whether the bodies would be brought to Andhra Pradesh or not.

The counsel for the petitioner, V Raghunath, contested the Advocate General’s submissions and put the casualties at more than 24 (Maoists) and stressed the need to preserve the bodies to get a true picture.

The bench said that it can pass orders only on matters that come under their jurisdiction and therefore ordered both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to preserve the bodies if they are brought into the respective states. The matter has been posted to Wednesday.
