​Hyderabad: Former Central Vigilance Commissioner N Vittal has expressed the hope that the demonetisation was very much necessary to curb fake currencies suspected to have come from Pakistan.

Inaugurating a symposium titled, “Demonetisation – A Trishul against Tax Evasion, Corruption and Black Money” organised by The Centenarian Trust of Chennai, in Chennai on Friday, he said the demonetisation steps were taken earlier during 1946 and in 1978.

Former Vigilance Commissioner expressed the hopes that the assurance given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the hardships undergone by common men would come to an end soon Presiding over the symposium Dr G Viswanathan, Founder Chancellor of VIT University, said

it was unfortunate that the attitude of evading tax has become a regular practice even among common men. He said only one per cent of our 127 crore population were regular taxpayers.

“If the professionals like engineers, businessmen, lawyers and doctors pay their taxes regularly, it would help the government to fund more on research works,” he added.

The Chancellor said that the corruption was the biggest problem. “If a Minister and government Secretary is involved in corruption, the whole department would become a hub of corrupt practices,” he added.

Recalling strong measures against corruption in China, Dr Viswanathan said nearly a lakh of corrupt officials, Ministers and politicians were jailed for the past three years.

M G Devasagayam IAS, former Chief Secretary of Haryana, Dr Vedagiri Shanmugasundaram, former VC of Manonmaneeyam Sundaranar University, S Viswanathan Editor Industrial Economist, were among those who spoke on the occasion.

Earlier, the meeting observed silence for the departed Chief Minister Dr J Jayalalithaa and Senior journalist “Cho” S Ramaswamy.
