Warangal: Officials of the Agriculture Department cancelled licences of nine chilli seeds dealers and served notices on 51 other dealers in the erstwhile Warangal district for selling fake seeds to farmers. This follows furore among farmers who had been fobbed off with spurious seeds.

Three months ago, there was a big controversy in the district as soon as sale of spurious seeds to farmers came to light in Narsampeta, Parakala, Torruru, Kesamudram, Nellikuduru and Mahabubabad areas.

Subsequently, having noticed that the plants showed stunted growth, famers of the united Warangal district staged a protest.

The government then plunged into action and DNA tests of the saplings revealed that the seeds were spurious.

On the whole, the spurious seeds caused crop loss in thousands of acres in Mahabubabad, 300 acres in Narasampet and 200 acres in Sayampet. In Mahabubabad mandal alone, 3,000 farmers were affected by the spurious seeds.

Farmers Veeranna and Ramesh of Mahabubabad said that no action had been taken till date against the dealers who washed off their hands by paying just Rs 600 as ‘compensation’ to each farmer who had invested not less than Rs 25,000 to raise the crop.

The district officials conceded that the farmers suffered loss due to spurious seeds and maintained that a report had been submitted to the government suggesting that compensation should be paid to the affected farmers.

Leader of farmers’ union Yadagiri demanded the government to take immediate action on the issue.
