Hyderabad: In a role reversal of sorts, TRS member Ch Ramesh on Wednesday took issue with Minister for Animal Husbandry T Srinivas Yadav on procurement of milk.
It happened when the Minister claimed that milk procurement milk in the State had gone up to 4 lakh litres. It was an increase from one lakh litres during the time when the State remained united. The government was contemplating modernising and expanding the Vijaya Dairy and the modalities were being worked out.
A total of Rs 13.55 crore was allocated for dairy development in the 2017-18 budget, he said He said though Vijaya Dairy products like milk, butter milk, ice cream, sweets and so on were well-received, there was no promotional activity in the past. Now, the government was taking steps to promote the Vijaya Dairy products in a big way.
The turnaround had come after an incentive of Rs 4 per litre of milk was given to the farmers. Soon, the government was planning to make spot payment of incentive to the farmers. Steps were also being taken to provide seeds at subsidised rates for growing the required fodder for the cattle, the Minister.
However, TRS member Ramesh disputed the claim by the Minister that the incentives being given to the farmers had helped increase milk procurement by Vijaya Dairy. The farmers were availing themselves of the incentives and were still supplying milk to private dairies.
He wondered why the government was neglecting the development of cooperative milk societies on the lines of the initiative taken by the Karnataka government. He pointed out that milk and other dairy products of private dairies are much in demand unlike Vijaya Dairy and stressed the need for encouraging cooperative dairy farms.
Another TRS member Srinivas Goud asserted that 50 per cent of the milk being supplied was adulterated and urged the government to take steps to check it. He also wanted the government to consider supply of milch cattle to the farmers on the lines of the government’s sheep distribution scheme.
The Minister refuted the charge that the incentives being provided to the farmers was being misused and sought cooperation of the members in ensuring that the Vijaya Dairy gets adequate milk supply.
