Even as Osmania University is abuzz with activity, the release of a commemorative stamp to mark the 100th year of its establishment seems to be missing. “It would have been appropriate and befitting to release a stamp as many other universities in the past have done,” says P Anuradha Reddy, convenor, INTACH Telangana and alumni of OU.

Hyderabad: Even as Osmania University is abuzz with activity, the release of a commemorative stamp to mark the 100th year of its establishment seems to be missing. “It would have been appropriate and befitting to release a stamp as many other universities in the past have done,” says P Anuradha Reddy, convenor, INTACH Telangana and alumni of OU.

In the past commemorative stamps were issued when Bombay University, Madras University and Calcutta University reached the landmark. When contacted, the assistant director of India Post, Telangana Circle B V Ramana said, “We have not received a request and as of now there is no release of a commemorative stamp.”

The procedure is for the university authorities to approach the postal department at least three months in advance with a request. The request is forwarded to New Delhi where a committee would decide and take a decision.

When the Banaras Hindu University turned hundred based on the request by the vice-chancellor Professor G C Tripathi, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the Finance Ministry to make arrangements and ordered the philatelic division of the Postal Department to issue a stamp to mark the occasion.

Sudhershan Jishnu who completed Law from OU in the eighties says, “Osmania University has stood the test of time and is one of the oldest universities in the country. A commemorative stamp to mark the occasion would be a tribute to a university that has stood tall over the years.”
