Hyderabad: Instant Repair Teams (IRTs) constituted by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) as part of monsoon action plan have been turning a blind eye to potholes and damaged roads in several stretches across the city. Other departments, including Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), are yet to restore the roads.

For instance, road between Yousufguda X Roads-Srinagar Colony have been damaged severely due to HMRL works and recent rains. The bumpy ride between the stretches has been back-breaking and resulting in several accidents on daily basis. Commuters complain that the potholes on the main arterial roads and bylanes have been increasing at alarming pace.

Sharing his experience, K Prashant, who works in a private firm, said," monsoon has not yet started properly and the road condition has turned bad to worse due moderate rains earlier this month." He said that the civic authorities have been turning blind eye to the issue even after repeated complaints.

Echoing his concern, Shilpa Shah, who works in a Media House, said that it is difficult for commuters to notice potholes during rains and these potholes filled with rain water cause accidents. She said that the road will be slipper throughout the year due to sewer leakage. Adding to the woes, the Metro Rail construction narrowed the road resulting in heavy traffic jams, she said.

“I am using this stretch on daily basis and the road condition is the same for the past some months. The potholes on the roads have also been increased. Apart from this, the construction of Metro Rail pillars is causing a lot of traffic jam”, says Raj Kumar, a local resident.

When contacted, a senior GHMC official said that the roads have been dug by the Metro Rail and they are restoring them. He also assured that the pot holes in the area will be repaired by the IRT teams.
