Hyderabad: City has been declared Open Defecation-Free (ODF) by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) as all the 150 wards under its jurisdiction are open defecation-free now. Corporators of all the 150 wards have declared that their wards are now ‘open defecation-free’ and requested the government to declare their wards as ODF ward.

The GHMC has issued a preliminary notification that Hyderabad is declared as open defecation free city and the GHMC Commissioner has stated that objections, complaints and suggestions if any may be brought to his notice on or before August 28 in writing.

The Swachh Survekshan Mission Initiative (SSMI) constituted by the Centre under the guidance of Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K Taraka Rama Rao has takenvarious initiatives to prevent open defecation and constructed individual toilets where sufficient place was available and community toilets where sufficient place not available and also provided prefabricated toilets at slums where the land is in dispute.

The GHMC provided 1975 individual house hold latrines and 384 public and community toilets to achieve the ODF city status to Hyderabad. Forty fourpublic toilets on BOT and 25 SHE E-toilets are under construction at different areas. As a part of the initiative for transforming the city into ``Open Defection Free”, the GHMC convinced about 295 Fuel stations and 390 Hotels / restaurant owners through Gandhian Methodology (Gandhigiri) and convinced them to open the toiletsfor general public use. The GHMC officials have also put signage boards to indicate the access of toilet to public.

Under Swachh Bharat Mission program, several awareness programs are being conducted by the GHMC at Circle and Zonal levels for arresting open urination in public places. AsliTarakki posters were also displayed at the public toilets, open defecation/urination spots to sensitize citizens against open defecation and urination. In some rare instances, where people are not utilizing the toilets made available and to discourage the act of open urination, the offenders are being garlanded and fined in the interest of upkeeping hygiene and cleanliness. Some 225 offenders were fined and collected from them Rs 38,120 since April last year.
