Hyderabad: In order to instill a sense of cleanliness among the students and the society, `Cleanliness Fortnight (Swachhta Pakhwada)’ would be observed in the schools from September 1 to 15 and various programmes have been planned in this
regard. The Union Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) has asked the State government and also other States to take up the programme. It has also issued guidelines for the conduct of the 15-day programme.
According to the schedule, on September 1 Swachhta Shapath Day should be observed and cleanliness awareness message should be posted on the website of the Educational department, organisations and schools. All students and teachers and staff should participate in Swachhta Shapath (cleanliness pledge) programme.
Swachhta Awareness Day should be observed on the second day of the programme on September 2 and meeting should be held with school management committees and parent teacher association members. The importance of the Cleanliness Fortnight should be explained in the meeting; the importance of cleanliness and sanitation among children and teachers should be informed, good practices for hygiene and sanitation in school as well as home should be encouraged.
On the third day of the programme, on September 3 cleanliness maintenance and planning day should be observed and teachers should inspect sanitary facilities in the school, institution and make proposal or plan for upkeep of the facilities.
The programme on September 7 would be teaching the children about proper method of hand washing before eating and propagating importance of Cleanliness Fortnight by teachers and students in association with local representative.
Personal Hygiene Day should be observed on September 8 and audio visual programme should be organised to motivate students, employees and others for maintaining cleanliness.
On September 9 Toilet Awareness Day should be observed and students should be taught on the hygienic use of using toilets. Schools may include Swachhta in the agenda of the meeting of their School Management Committees. Wastage of water should be checked and water should be channelled to gardens from the hand washing areas.
The programme on September 10 includes Community Awareness Day and increased focus should be given on community participation for the Swachhta Abhiyan in schools and institutions and teachers should also be involved in undertaking cleanliness and awareness drives in nearby areas. A school march should be organised with sloganeering.
Letter Writing Day should be held on September 14 and children should be asked to write letters to Sarpanch, SMC Members for maintenance of school toilets and schools. The district collectors should hold meeting of the district level committee chaired by the local Member of Parliament, to further propagate the message of the Swachhta Pakhwada in the society.
The last day of the fortnight programme should have a `Meeting the Government Day’ and State Education minister, secretaries, district collectors, district education officers and school Inspectors should
address the school children.
