Nalgonda: Dera Baba, who was convicted in a rape case on Friday in Haryana, owned at least 54 acres in the name of his ashram at Veliminedu village in the district.

The said land was included under survey numbers 98, 102 and 132 in the village. The land value is estimated to be about Rs 40 to Rs 50 crore as per the present market rate.

Dera Baba purchased the land from farmers in 2008 and built a compound wall around it. The land is close to the Vijayawada-Hyderabad national highway.

The revenue officials visited the ashram and inspected the land on Saturday. Of the total land, 7.24 acres is stated to be that of the government.

Chityala MRO Visalakshi said the land would be surveyed and compound wall built in the government land would be pulled down. She said a report would be submitted to the state government shortly.

It may be recalled that the Haryana High Court on Friday ruled that Dera Baba’s properties should be attached. It was not yet clear what should be done with the Baba’s properties at Velimineedu.

According to ashram manager Shyam Lal, the land is meant for executing several developmental programmes. He said that spiritual programmes are scheduled at the ashram on Sundays.
