Hyderabad: A separate State Drug Testing Centre (SDTC) will soon come up for testing Ayurvedic, Homeopathy and Unani drugs being manufactured by 200 pharmaceutical units.

According to Telangana State Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) Department sources, the move has arisen out of the State government’s decision to strengthen the alternative medical system.

Speaking to The Hans India, a senior official from the AYUSH Department said, of late, there has been a manifold increase in the number of people opting for alternative medicine.

This has prompted the State government to streamline the drug administrative system, practice and sale of medicines.
The new SDTC will have a two-fold functioning. There are about 200 alternative medicine pharmaceutical units including some multinational companies operating in the State.

Similarly, the registration of practitioners of alternative medicine will be strictly enforced as in the case of allopathic doctors. The AYUSH board has decided to ensure proper registration and enrolment of doctors practicing the alternative medical systems.

That apart, even the running pharmacies of alternative medicines have several gaps, besides there is acute shortage of pharmacists in the alternative medical systems.

Following this, it was decided to streamline the issue of licences to open medical shops to sell Ayurveda, Homeopathy and Unani drugs in the State. Also, the board has decided to clear a proposal to start a diploma in pharmacy course in alternative medicine, the official added.
