Hyderabad: Roads and Buildings Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao said the department has been completing 14,000 km long roads at a cost of Rs 15,000 crore, 532 road bridges at a cost of Rs 2,782 crore and proposed 174 check-dams at a cost of Rs 520 crore and added that the execution of works is going on at a brisk pace.

In a press release on Wednesday, the Minister said the State government targeted development of single roads into double-lane roads and double-lane roads into four-lane roads to link mandals with district headquarters, district headquarters with the State capital and Hyderabad to the important towns and cities of the country.

As part of road development, 532 road bridges would be either strengthened or built. These road bridges will be executed as part of several schemes, including a World Bank programme. While building the road bridges, construction of check dams had been included wherever there is technical feasibility, as per the press release.

The Roads and Buildings department deputed a technical team to Maharashtra to study check-dams. The team observed various road bridges and found that 174 bridges are suitable for construction of check-dams. It proposed a maximum of 63 check-dams in Adilabad district, 33 in Medak and 29 in Khammam, the press release said.

With an extra cost of 12-15 per cent of the road bridge, a check dam can be built, the Minister said. There were instances of groundwater improvement following construction of check-dams. The drinking water problem of cattle will be solved to a major extent. If the check dams are built with a missionary zeal, greenery will improve and the fruits of greenery would trickle down to the people, he added.

If the check-dam structures are designed as green structures, it would solve problems like global warming and reduce the impact of Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) emissions on environment, he added. Construction of check-dams would not result in problems like inundation of land like major anicuts and facilitate solving water at many places although in smaller quantities, he said.
