Hyderabad: The 12-acre park at Nallagandla has become a problem for residents instead of a stressbuster as it had been turned into a dumping yard causing pollution and severe stench. The Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) had written a letter to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy asking the latter to take action at the earliest.

The Nallagandla residents’ association represented the garbage problem to the TSPCB which later shot off a letter to GHMC Commissioner but, no action has been taken so far.

According to the Minister of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India notified Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 dated 8 April 2016, under Environment (Protection) Act 1986 in Supersession of the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2000 to regulate the management and handling of solid waste.

Whereas, under the rule 15 of Solid Waste Management (SWM), 2016 the duties and responsibilities of local authorities and village Panchayats of census towns and urban agglomeration is specified and as per rule 19 of SWM, 2016 the operator of the facility shall design and setup the facility as per the technical guidelines issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in this regard from time to time.

When enquired about the same, a senior GHMC official said there is no other solution than transfer station and there are around 20 transfer stations in Nallagandla area. He said the dump yard cannot be shifted to any other place but, the transfer station can be improved by lifting the garbage in one day. He also said that the GHMC had not yet responded to the letter from TSPCB.
