NEET negative marking gives nightmares to 3 lakh students
Insistence by National Board of Exams (NBE) for negative marking in the National Eligibility and entrance test (Neet), meant for admissions into undergraduate and postgraduate courses in medicine from the upcoming academic year, stirred the hornet’s nest among a large number of students preparing for the screening test.

According to rough estimates, around 3 lakh students from Andhra and Telangana states are undergoing gruelling coaching for the toughest screening test in swanky corporate colleges for the Neet-2018.
A notice issued a few days ago by the NBE, the nodal agency entrusted with the conduct of the screening test, stated that the ‘correct response’ will help candidates score four marks for each question while ‘incorrect response’ will make them forgo one mark for every wrong answer from their score on hand.
The candidates, however, will not suffer any loss if they leave any question. The screening test contains 150 marks, each carrying four marks. The previous year’s Neet had no provision for negative marking.
Dr Nanda Kishore, member of the Medical Council of India (MCI), said negative marking will surely add up to stress on the students although the measure is intended to eliminate non-serious candidates from the race and shore up standards in medical education.
The leading corporate colleges are reportedly charging Rs 2 lakh per year for each Plus-Two student seeking medical admission through Neet. Besides, long-term coaching is offered for those who failed to make it to the admissions through the Neet for a fee of Rs 2 lakh-Rs 2.5 lakh for each student, it is learnt. In the backdrop of the negative marking, the coaching will obviously be more rigorous, putting the candidates to more hardship.
The Student Federation of India (SFI) state leader Bhagawan feared the Neet’s latest stipulation will make students more vulnerable to stress and distress which have been of late manifesting in corporate colleges in the form of a streak of suicides involving students taking coaching for medicine and IIT admissions. It is high time human resource development minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao took up the issue with his counterpart in the NDA government with a request to scrap the negative marking, he said.
