As Adivasis and Lambadas compete to hold public meeting
Mahabubabad: The competing members of Adivasi and Lambada communities vied with each other to organise public meetings at the same time and same venue in the town leading to tension on Sunday.
It was said that the Adivasi outfits like Tudum Debba, Adivasi Parishat and others have made a petition to the district police seeking permission to organise a public meeting at Gandhi Park in the town on Sunday.
The leaders of Lambada Ikya Vedika (JAC) have also wanted the police permission to organise the meeting at the same location on the day. But the Superintendent of Police, N Koti Reddy, denied permission to both the communities anticipating law order problems. In order to prevent any untoward incidents and mobilisation of public, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Indian Penal Code and Section 30 of The Police Act 1861 were imposed in the town. Nonetheless, the members of both the communities arrived in large numbers since early hours on the day.
In a statement the police said that nearly 400 leaders and activists of both communities were arrested and taken to different police stations in the district to avoid any law and order problems taking place.
The police also took several leaders into preventive custody since Saturday night. Additional police forces from Kothagudem and Khammam districts were also deployed in the town.
It might be noted that the leaders of Tudum Debba like its state president Vattam Upender and vice-president Komuram Prabhakar were demanding the Centre withdrawal of Lambadas from the ST reservation list.
They complained that though they had first applied for the permission the police intentionally denied permission. Nearly 20,000 Adivasis were restricted by police to reach Mahabubabad and nearly 3,000 Adivasis were arrested at the town and its surroundings.
On the other hand, Lambada Ikya Vedika leader Jai Singh Rathod said alleged that State government and a section of politicos were dividing ST communities for their political mileage. The TRS government promised 12 per cent reservation but to no avail. Meanwhile, at an emergency meeting of Lambada Students JAC at Kakatiya University its leaders A Vinod Lok Naik and G Madan Naik objected the demand of Adivasis. Lambadas were included in the STs list because the community was deprived of its share in the development for long. The leaders of both the communities were planning to hold ‘Atmagaurava Sadassu’ across the State.
