Hyderabad: Effect of northerly winds and cyclone Phethai have led to skies remaining overcast with cool winds resulting in a sharp fall in temperatures in Hyderabad and rest of Telangana for the last two days.

Light rainfall (1 mm to 1 cm) was experienced in many places, including Hyderabad, Warangal, Medak, Ramagundam and Nalgonda on Tuesday while moderate rainfall (between 2 cm and 6 cm) was recorded in Medak and Khammam.

The lowest minimum temperatures were seen in Adilabad (11 degrees Celsius) while Medak recorded 13 degrees Celsius and Hyderabad 15 degrees C.

Appreciable fall of minimum temperatures (ranging from 2.1 degrees C to 4 degrees C) was seen in some parts of the State.

Residents of Hyderabad woke up to cool winds and cloudy skies with drizzle is some parts on Tuesday. The minimum temperature recorded early morning on Tuesday was 15.8 degrees C.

The day temperatures in Telangana, especially Hyderabad fell by 8 to 9 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and people could feel cold and breezy winds all through the day. Full cloudy and overcast skies did not help the situation either.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperature (day) recorded in Nizamabad was 19.9 degrees C, in Adilabad 20.8 degrees C, in Khammam 22.4 degrees C, Mahbubnagar 23.1 degrees C.

According to IMD, Hyderabad Director Y K Reddy, northerly winds, mainly from Uttar Pradesh and surrounding states, resulted in a dip in day temperatures in several parts of Telangana.

"Northerly winds’ impact is seen four to five times every season. But this time, the effect was more as cyclone and depression effect in neighbouring states led to cloudy skies and rain and hence temperatures dropped considerably," he said.

YK Reddy said that maximum temperatures were 6 to 10 degrees C below normal in entire Telangana.

The weather forecast until 8.30 am on Wednesday is light to moderate rain at isolated places over Telangana while dry weather is likely to prevail across the state over the next week.
