Hyderabad: A total of 14,782 drunken driving cases were booked within the limits of Cyberabad this year. Two-wheeler riders topped the list of offenders followed by four-wheeler and three-wheeler drivers, while a total of 4,203 were convicted.
According to officials, regular special drives against drunken driving, auto over loading, driving by minors, dangerous driving, road and footpath encroachments were being conducted. “Divisional Enforcement Teams have been formed to focus on these aspects to ensure road safety,” said Cyberabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar.
Over enforcement of traffic rules, the police officials clarified that there were no set targets imposed on the police department or officials, as the only purpose of imposing penalty on motorists was to bring discipline on the roads and to ensure safety of motorists as well as pedestrians on the road. Even though the penalties crossed Rs 100 crore in the year 2017, this year it just crossed Rs 91 crore. The police officials cited this to be bringing in discipline on roads. “This reflects awareness and discipline amongst the commuters brought by the tough enforcement this year,” said S M Vijay Kumar, DCP Traffic.
The Traffic DCP further explained that the Traffic Training Institute (TTI) located at Madhapur Traffic police station is conducting counselling for violators, awareness sessions to target groups (schools, colleges, IT companies, cab and auto drivers, truck drivers etc) daily.
The TTI also conducts regular basic orientation courses for traffic police personnel and traffic volunteers. The curriculum includes basic life support skill, traffic technology, behaviour orientation etc apart from core traffic subjects. In the year 2018, 37 batches of ‘BOC’ trainings were conducted covering entire traffic wing of Cyberabad. Public address system has been installed at 21 junctions in Cyberabad limits. It helps in guiding the pedestrians, vehicle drivers and other road users to ensure safety and free flow of traffic.
A dedicated Whatsapp Number 9490617346 has been put in place to encourage public to identify traffic violations in their areas and to report to police. There has been a good response from the public and 31,816 violations have been reported till now, he added.
