Hyderabad: The Pradesh Congress Committee would complete the preliminary exercise on selection of candidates for the Parliament elections in the next week by recommending names to the All India Congress Committee. According to the party leaders the Pradesh Election Committee would meet on February 25 to shortlist the names of party candidates for all the Parliamentary Constituencies in the State after scrutinising the applications being submitted by them.

Party leaders said that as many as 340 leaders including several senior and former MPs have submitted applications along with their bio-datas to the PEC till February 14 and on the average about 20 are seeking party nomination for the 17 Lok Sabha seats of the State. The Pradesh Election Committee has examined the applications and decided to sit again on February 25. However, due to the ongoing Assembly session, the meeting may be postponed to February 27.

Party leaders said that the PEC would complete the exercise by end of this month. It seems the AICC has given green signal to the PCC to complete the process of recommending names to the Parliamentary Constituencies as it has not taken any decision on the alliance with Peoples’ Front partners in Telangana. In various States the AICC has concluded the agreements with other parties on pre-poll alliances.

As the high command did not evince keen interest on having the alliance, the PCC has also not initiated any discussions with Telangana Telugu Desam, Communist Party of India and Telangana Jana Samithi. A senior leader of the party said that more or less it was clear that the Congress would contest all the 17 seats in the State and PCC would recommend names to the AICC.

The leader said that as the Election Commission may announce the schedule for the Parliament elections at any time, the PCC has to complete the preliminary exercise on the candidates to allow the AICC to announce the candidates at the earliest. The recommendations to be made by the PCC would be scrutinised by the AICC in two or three stages.

The PCC president has already asked the District Congress Committee presidents to submit their recommendations to the PCC in the sealed covers. The PEC would also go through the recommendations of the DCCs in its meeting in next week. The AICC incharge secretaries have completed discussions with leaders of the Parliamentary Constituencies in the last week and have taken their opinions on the candidates.
