Surf City USA Breaks Surfing Guinness World Records® Titles. ixty-six surfers from around the world ride a custom built 42-foot, 1300 pound surfboard for 12 seconds to break the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS for “Most People Riding a Surfboard at Once” on Saturday, June 20, 2015 in Huntington Beach, CA, also known as Surf City USA.

Sixty-six surfers from around the world ride a custom built 42-foot, 1300 pound surfboard for 12 seconds to break the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS for “Most People Riding a Surfboard at Once” on Saturday, June 20, 2015 in Huntington Beach, CA, also known as Surf City USA. The surfboard, which thousands of spectators filled the Surf City USA shoreline to see, also breaks an additional record, "Largest Surfboard,” after official confirmation from GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS. Notable Big Board riders include professional surfers Brett Simpson and Lakey Peterson, both U.S. Open of Surfing title holders.

The attempt was timed to coincide with International Surfing Day which took place on Sunday, June 21st. This past Sunday also marked the first day of summer. The Huntington Beach attempt totaled 66 amateur and professional surfers riding the custom-built surfboard, exceeding the previous record by 19 persons. The previous record holder for “Most People Riding a Surfboard at Once” was 47 people, set on March 5, 2005 in Snapper Rocks, Queensland, Australia. Huntington Beach now owns the first “Largest Surfboard” GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title.
The design is based on Australian surfboard shaper Nev Hyman’s schematics, while Orange County boat builder Westerly Marine and Rhode Island’s mouldCAM along with local surf industry shapers collaborated to craft the massive board. Its design mimics one of the famous short boards ridden by Brett Simpson, Hurley sponsored professional surfer and Huntington Beach native.
The surf board will soon be displayed as an iconic cultural tribute to one of California’s most distinctive and beloved outdoor sports at the International Surfing Museum in Downtown Huntington Beach, allowing the board to become an attraction in itself.
