In accordance with the Income Tax Law, 1961 under section 139A, PAN or Permanent Account Number became mandatory for the citizens of the country. The PAN is a 15-digit account number that is required to pay taxes and file IT-R (Income Tax Returns). The concept of PAN was first introduced in 1972 by the government of India and was not mandatory for each and everyone at that time. Now that the PAN card is a mandatory document, the process of assigning the account has also been simplified. People can use the channel offline or online to get one by themselves.
Therefore, in case someone wants to get a new PAN card and go through the online channel, follow this step-by-step guide.
The process is simple; People just need to visit the corresponding online portal and complete the PAN application form online. Also, keep in mind that there is a penalty of Rs 10,000 for having more than one PAN card.
1. Open the NSDL or UTISL website and choose the 'New PAN' option
Alternatively, users can click directly on "https://www.pan.utiitsl.com/PAN/" or https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/endUserRegisterContact.html to go to the application of the PAN card.

2. Fill in all the details in the form
The details are personal, and it is mandatory to provide all the information. This information includes the applicant's full name, address, date of birth, contact number, gender and information related to income, etc.
3. Click 'Submit' after the form is filled
Once the applicants have finished with the form, they should submit it by clicking on the "Submit" button at the bottom of the screen
4. Pay a nominal fee for the processing of the PAN application
After this, the users have to pay a nominal amount for the processing of the PAN application. For Indian residents, the charge is Rs 93, while foreign residents must pay Rs 864. Also, keep in mind that both amounts exclude the GST.
5. Payment can be made by credit/debit card, demand draft or net-banking
Once the payment process is successful, save the confirmation number for future references.
Important Note: Another essential thing to keep in mind is that, once the application is accepted, applicants must send the documents by courier or post it to NSDL to continue with the processing of the form along with the printing of 15-digit acknowledgement number page with applicant's signature on it. The list of documents includes
• Applicants passport-size photograph
• Proof of identity
• Draft demand in case the mode of payment is DD
• Proof of address
