Highlights

  • An impression had gathered that since people were under lockdown, crime were subdued
  • It was belied by a spike of criminal activities of late, mounting pressure on the police force

Hyderabad: The restrictions on lockdown are being eased in a phased manner by the government, but is it also paving way for rise in crime in the city?

All this while, when the citizens were forced under lockdown, it was being projected that as people were not venturing out the crime was reducing.

But, going by the reports in the last three days, the kinds of crimes which have come into light are utterly disgusting.

On Monday, the incident of a youngster being stabbed to death by a gang of nearly 10 men in broad daylight sent jitters across the city because the man was chased for 1 km and was stabbed to death mercilessly as he was in love with a girl.

In another case, a man colluded with 3 others and murdered his cousin over a property dispute in Chaderghat. However it is being perceived that the police was able to nab the culprits and the investigation is on, but no official confirmation regarding this has been put out by the cops.

And in the third incident, a senior citizen aged about 70 years was arrested by the Jubilee Hills police for allegedly raping a girl aged about 24 years.

A senior police officer from the Commissioner's office on condition of anonymity noted, "The police department has to shoot two birds with one bullet during this time, which means that we also have to monitor the lockdown and simultaneously control the crime rate.

We have sufficient manpower to tackle crime, but the cops need some briefing now regarding the increasing criminal activities and it will be done by the top brass very quickly."

However, going by the trends of rising criminal activities, the accurate data is not yet known, but officially the aforementioned ones were gory and there could be other crimes which missed the attention of media.

Nevertheless, controlling crimes would be of utmost importance to the police department, even as they are seized of the daunting task of enforcing lockdown with the curbs being relaxed.
