Khammam: The increasing mercury levels have been creating a sense of uneasiness and panic among the Khammam denizens. With the temperatures oscillating between 40 and 42 degrees centigrade for the last three days, the citizens are fearing to come out in the scorching heat, and remaining indoors from 11 am to 5 pm. With many remaining indoors, a curfew like situation has been prevailing in the Khammam city with most of the busiest roads like Nehru Circle, Sri Sri Circle, Collectorate road, bus stand and Railway station posing a deserted look. Further, due to summer effect, the commercial centres and other shops have been making brisk business after 6 pm.

The temperatures in the last three days have been significantly higher than normal in most parts of the district, especially in Kothagudem, Palvoncha and Yellandu mandals. The temperatures have touched 42 degrees Centigrade in Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Sathupalli, Kalluru, Wyra, Madhira, Kusumanchi, Errupalem, Yellandhu, Mudhigonda, Pinapaka, Enkuru and Aswaraopeta

Meanwhile, people to protect themselves from scorching heat, have been using caps and umbrellas. Motorcyclists are using scarves and helmets to protect themselves. To escape from the extreme weather, people are taking respite in cold drinks and tender coconut water.

As many people have suffered from sunstrokes last summer, the doctors are advising the people to take precautions like limiting exposure to heat and sun, staying hydrated, wear pale coloured comfortable clothing and avoiding intense exercise. The district administration has started campaign over preventive measures to be taken against sunstroke.
