Mahabubabad: Accusing the authorities of failing to update his land records, a farmer attempted suicide by setting himself on fire on the premises of Mandal Revenue Office at Dantalapally on Tuesday. The farmer has been identified as I Shankar of Kummarikuntla village.

According to reports, Shankar had run from pillar to post to get his land records updated under the Land Record Updation Programme (LRUP) taken up by the Telangana government.

Shankar, who claimed that he has 8 acres, which he has been cultivating for many years, had repeatedly met the revenue officials concerned besides submitting a petition for the updation of land on his name. The MRO updated the land record on some other's name, he alleged. It's learnt that Shankar had also submitted a representation to the officials to probe into the issue, but to no avail.

He also filed a petition with the District Collector during Prajavani programme. Vexed by this, he attempted suicide by pouring petrol on himself at the MRO office. However, the police, who were present there, took him into custody and gave counselling to him. The police said that Shankar is in disturbed state and informed his family members. Dantalapalle Mandal Revenue Officer T Gowri Shankar said that he was unaware of the facts as he took charge recently. It's learnt that the said land is in legal tangle.
