Mahbubnagar: The Brahmotsavams of Sri Laxmi Chennakeshava Swamy weer held on a grand note at the historic Gangapur temple in Jadcherla mandal of Mahbubnagar district on Sunday.
In fact, the week-long festivities of the presiding deity of Gangapur temple started from January 31 and are expected to continue till February 4. As part of these celebrations, the temple authorities conducted Rathotsavam on the occasion of Rathasaptami on Sunday.
"Every year in February, the Gangapur temple's Jatara is celebrated grandly. The Brahmmotsavam is scheduled for about a week's period and every day we conduct some or the other special pujas and taking out processions. Though officially special programmes are held only for five days, the Jatara goes on for more than a month, where in more than 3-5 lakh devotees visit Gangapur for taking the special darshan of Sri Laxmi Chennakeshava Swamy," informed Srinivas Raju, Executive Officer of the temple.
The Gangapur temple is a historic temple and its history dates back to Pallava and Chalukya kings. Inscriptions on the stones also state that the great Maratha King Shivaji had also visited this temple and donated money for its construction. However, with not much grants from the government, there are a lot of things which are left unattended to. The Prahari (peripheral compound wall of temple) is yet to be constructed and other facilities on the temple premises for the devotees are also to be provided.
