Secunderabad: Vexed up with the passive attitude of Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB), the residents of Vasavi Nagar, Kharkhana, took it upon themselves and repaired the road by filling the potholes to give temporary relief to the locals

"For the past many years we have been facing difficulties to use the road. As the road was in very bad condition it was very difficult for locals to ply their vehicles. Our colony has 500 families and everyone uses the same road," said T Satish Gupta, the president of Vasavi Nagar Welfare Association.

As the colony roads were laid 40 years back when the colony was formed, they are in bad condition and are all uniformly dotting with potholes. "Due to this issue every day we see many commuters sustaining injuries. Several times we have complained to the authorities in SCB concerned to re-carpet the road, but no action was taken. So to give a temporary solution, we have decided to do it ourselves.

Laying a tar road would be costly, so they decided to fill the road with cement. The lanes that were ridden with potholes were filled with cement. Rs 20,000 form the association funds was used for the development of the road. The road repair work started on Friday morning and took 8 hours to complete work.

"Apart from this even drain system of our colony which is 45 years old and never been repaired or neither new pipeline was laid. Drain water routinely overflows from an open nala and due to this, the patchwork we carried out may get washed away. Many times, we moved SCB officials about this issue but no steps have been taken, added Gupta.
