Warangal: The onus is on every citizen to conserve environment, especially making it free from plastic litter, said Mayor Gunda Prakash Rao, Warangal East MLA Nannapuneni Narender and Urban District Collector Prashanth Jeevan Patil, who reviewed the implementation of ban on plastics carry bags below 50 microns here on Tuesday.

The Mayor said that people need to restrain from using plastics as much as possible to protect the environment from pollution arising out of plastics.

The people are bound to face severe health hazards such as cancer, PCOD, ovarian, hormonal imbalance etc due to heavy toxic burdens associated with plastics, he said.

Referring to the ill-effects of plastics, Narender urged people not to see it as the responsibility of the administration only, people's participation is also key.

The plastic bags traders need to cooperate with the administration by not selling plastic bags thin below 50 microns, Collector Patil said, referring to the rampant use of banned plastic bags in the city.

The business establishments need to note that they will have to face cases if they continue to use banned bags even after slapped penalty twice, he said. Stressing the need for creating awareness about the ill-effects of plastics among the masses, he said that they should be encouraged to use jute, paper and cloth bags

The Collector told Municipal Commissioner N Ravi Kiran to set up a tollfree number for the convenience of people to give information about banned products. Municipal health officer Dr B Raja Reddy and TSPCB official Ravidas were among others present.
