Kakinada: As the Kakinada Municipal Corporation (KMC) officials are busy in conducting the ensuing local body elections, sanitary conditions turned poor in some areas of the smart city. Ramaropet which was once a neat and clean locality is now plagued by worst type of sanitary conditions. One of the oldest areas in the Smart City, Ramaropet, Gandhinagar, has seen a marked change over the years as people made the locality their home slowly. Open drains, strewn garbage, lack of clean drinking water and mosquito menace made the locality a difficult place to live in. Although the area has schools, hospitals, departmental stores, shops and a vegetable market, lack of hygiene remains a matter of concern for everyone living in the area.

Many people expressed their displeasure over the poor drainage system. Some of the lanes stink a lot as public urination menace robs the peace of mind of the colony residents. Due to poor sanitation in residential areas, viral fever cases are reported in slums and surrounding areas. Now, especially, after the outbreak of the coronavirus, which has become a global pandemic, people of these localities in the city are extremely scared as it may spread due to the filthy and dirty conditions prevailing here.
