Municipal Corporation drain causes inconvenience to SPMVV students
The municipal corporation drain passing through Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVVV) is causing serious concern to about 3,500 hostel inmates and other staff members.
Tirupati: The municipal corporation drain passing through Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVVV) is causing serious concern to about 3,500 hostel inmates and other staff members.
Besides spreading unbearable foul smell, it has become a breeding centre for mosquitoes. As viral fevers are spreading, the hostlers are scared and the inmates express their anguish.
The university has been facing the problem with the drainage line for a long time. The drain comes from Vidyanagar and passes through SPMVV to join another drain at SV Nagar. In the university campus it passes in front of hostel buildings resulting in severe discomfort for the students as well as staff.
The university authorities were saying that they could not do anything as it belongs to the Municipal Corporation. However, it is learnt that they took up the issue with successive Commissioners for several years, but could find no solution.
They were asking for diversion of the drain in some other way out of campus. But the Corporation authorities argue that the drains should take their natural path and should not be disturbed.
The drain is covered by deep bushes and bamboo trees on either side and has become shelter for snakes and other creatures. Students were finding it difficult to go through the path especially during night time.
The university has developed Gandhi Square in the campus near Humanities Block recently with Rs 65 lakh which was very near to the drainage line. Though, students and their family members feel like sitting at the Gandhi Square to spend some time pleasantly, they have been experiencing a lot of inconvenience with the drainage.
Hostel inmates were saying that they have been experiencing unbearable smell and mosquito menace. Even fogging was also not being done regularly. The fever cases are on rise and a number of students have been diagnosed with typhoid. When contacted, in charge Vice-Chancellor Prof V Uma has said that they have represented the problem to corporation authorities.
